Albuquerque Tech and Startup Scene Expands With New Roles and Funding Rounds

Albuquerque startups added 312 new job listings between July 1 and July 10, according to postings tracked by the city’s workforce portal.
The increase comes as national defense contracts and private investment shift toward regional innovation centers that can move quickly on specialized engineering work. Companies here benefit from lower operating costs than coastal hubs while still accessing talent from the University of New Mexico pipeline and Sandia National Laboratories.
Local Hubs Drive the Growth
Activity centers on two main sites. Innovate ABQ on Central Avenue opened a second cohort of ten startups this month, each receiving $75,000 in seed support and shared lab space. Two blocks away, the UNM Innovation Center on Lomas Boulevard expanded its hardware prototyping lab, creating six full-time technician roles and ten paid internships for electrical engineering students.
Further north, Sandia National Laboratories on Eubank Boulevard posted openings for 45 mid-level software developers and systems analysts tied to ongoing energy-grid projects. The lab’s contractor partners in the same corridor reported another 28 openings in the same week.
Numbers Behind the Hiring Wave
City data released July 9 showed Albuquerque’s tech-sector employment rose 8 percent year-over-year, reaching 19,400 workers. Average starting salary for software roles listed in the latest cycle stands at $112,000. Three local venture funds closed deals totaling $14.2 million in the second quarter, with the largest check going to a Nob Hill firm developing drone navigation software.
