Albuquerque Lands 3 Major Green Tech Plants, Targets 100% Renewable Energy

Maxeon Solar Technologies is pouring $1 billion into what will be the largest solar cell and panel factory in the United States, on the West Side of Albuquerque. Operations are scheduled to start in 2025, though that timeline could shift with supply-chain and permitting variables, and the facility alone is expected to reshape the city's manufacturing floor space for photovoltaics.
The investments come as the Inflation Reduction Act continues to pull clean-energy supply chains inland. Albuquerque, already home to SCHOTT Solar's production lines for concentrated solar thermal receivers and 64 MW of photovoltaic modules, is positioning itself as a node in the domestic solar supply chain rather than just an assembly point for imported cells.
Grid-Scale Solar and Storage on the Horizon
Array Technologies, a solar tracker manufacturer, is expanding its operations to Albuquerque's West Side, citing incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act. Trackers, the motorised racks that tilt panels toward the sun, are a critical component for utility-scale solar farms, and Array's growth signals that the city is becoming a hub for more than just panel assembly.
SCHOTT Solar, which already runs a facility on the city's south side, plans to expand from 200,000 to 800,000 square feet. That would quadruple its footprint for making receivers used in concentrated solar power plants, the kind that can store heat and generate electricity after dark, alongside its photovoltaic module lines.
Albuquerque has committed to sourcing 100% of its municipal electricity from renewables by 2025. City data shows it has already passed 88%, drawing on 7.5 MW of onsite solar arrays and a 25 MW Solar Direct project that feeds power directly into the grid.
Green Hydrogen Catalysts and the Next Wave
Pajarito Powder, a local startup, received $275,000 in LEDA funding, the state's economic development grant program, to expand its green hydrogen catalyst manufacturing plant in Albuquerque. The expansion is expected to create 50 jobs with an average salary of $61,000, a wage that sits above the city's median household income.
The company makes catalyst powders used in electrolyzers that split water into hydrogen and oxygen without carbon emissions. While green hydrogen is still an emerging market, the presence of a catalyst manufacturer in Albuquerque gives the city a foothold in what federal energy planners see as a key storage and industrial fuel technology for the 2030s.
Over the next three to five years, the convergence of Maxeon's gigafactory, Array's tracker plant, SCHOTT's expanded facility, and Pajarito Powder's catalyst line could make Albuquerque one of the most vertically integrated clean-energy manufacturing hubs in the country. The city won't just be installing solar panels, it will be making the cells, the trackers, the receivers, and the catalysts that decarbonise other industries.
Whether the 2025 municipal renewable target is met on schedule depends on grid interconnection timelines and the final build-out of the Solar Direct project. But the roadmap is increasingly visible: a supply chain built from catalyst powder to finished modules, all within a few miles of Interstate 40.
